John Galsworthy

John Galsworthy 2

I read "The Forsyth Saga" in my twenties. I guess I had some connection to Edwardian and Victorian English literature. I enjoyed the inner thoughts of the characters. More importantly the nuances of society was fascinating. It was a mileau I would never be a part of in being born in the wrong country at the wrong time in history in addition to the fact I would have been the fish monger's wife in all probability. Galsworthy won the Nobel prize for "The Forsyth Saga" in 1932.

Galsworthy was also a playwright and is known for his quotes.

Famous quotes of Galsworthy.

Idealism increases in direct proportion to one's distance from the problem.

It isn't enough to love people because they're good to you, or because in some way or other you're going to get something by it. We have to love because we love loving.

I don't know much about morality and that, but there is this: It's always worth while before you do anything to consider whether it's going to hurt another person more than is absolutely necessary.

The value of a sentiment is the amount of sacrifice you are prepared to make for it.

The beginnings and endings of all human undertakings are untidy.
If you do not think about your future, you cannot have one.

  1. What a wise man! I haven't read any of his books, though I've heard of them and, of course, there was the TV series. Perhaps it's time to try at least one - on Gutenberg, eh? Already!

    1. You will not be disappointed. With our busy lives, I don't recommend too many books. There are just so much out there. The Forsyth Saga is worth the time.

  2. Hi Ann - I haven't read the Forsyth Saga - but was hooked on the tv serial ... and I'm not normally hooked on things. "If you do not think about your future, you cannot have one": that quote stood out for me ... cheers Hilary

    1. I wish the series played in the United States. Forsyth Saga does have a storyline that modern audiences could buy into.

    1. I thought his perspective was not one you hear that often. Although, the cynic in me believes the ability to love someone is more a reflection of an individual's nature. Some people have a softer heart.

    1. After I read Galsworthy, I became a book snob. He upped the bar of what sort of fiction I liked.

    1. Hard to pick favorite quotes. They get there for a reason. I thought Galsworthy's quotes reflected his character.

Your thoughts.

Look out A to Z, I'll be back.

A to Z theme reveal. Well this theme is pretty weak. It is Dogs I have loved, fairy tales, myths, cats birds and what grows in my yard...  ...
